Tips for outdoor chess

June brought rain almost every day (it even dampened the Gaspee Days festival!), and now July has arrived and we've been experiencing some of the hottest weather this summer, almost breaking records.

Our outdoor chess games are always optional, and when the weather is too hot to handle, we don't expect anyone to make it to the park. Even though the granite chess tables are under shade, the air quality can be dangerous and sitting for an hour with extreme heat is quite uncomfortable.

If you are serious about chess, we encourage you to sign up to be on our E-Mail list to receive notices or to subscribe to this blog by clicking on the RSS Feed link to the right. We will also be posting updates on our Facebook page

If you choose to come to any events in the park during the hot summer evenings, we recommend that you do all of the following:

  • Be aware that we do not have access to the Aspray Boat House.
  • Before you arrive in the park, drink plenty of fluids without caffeine or alcohol. Bring a water bottle with you!
  • Wear loose-fitting, lightweight clothing in light colors.
  • Bring bug repellant and a small towel.
Enjoy the summer, and stay cool!
